Denman Marine specialises in custom wooden boat building.  We can build either fully traditional wooden boats in clinker or carvel construction or modern timber composite boats such as hard chine, clinker ply or strip planked vessels.  Any design accommodated for example - Paul gartside, Iain Oughtred, John Welsford, Joel White, Francois Vivier, Norwalk Island Sharpies, David Payne, B&B yacht design etc, etc - As long as there is some timber in the boat we are happy to build it.

Denman Marine also provides fit out services (both for timber and fibreglass boats) and alterations/repairs to existing vessels.

We only use the finest materials available and are fortunate to have access to the best boatbuilding timbers in the world - Huon Pine, King Billy Pine and Celery Top Pine.  We also use West System and ATL Composite epoxies in our modern composite boats.

Being a smaller custom builder, we are able to offer very competitive labour rates compared to mainland builders and offer interstate delivery on any vessels constructed.

If you are looking at having a boat professionally built to any stage of construction (e.g. bare hull, hull and deck) or a fully completed vessel please contact andrew@denmanmarine.com.au or call on 0413765984.

Dinghy Packs Available

If you are interested in building a clinker dinghy like the Gartside 10 but don't know where to get the materials, Denman  Marine can put together a dinghy pack for you which includes all timber (e.g planking stock machined to thickness, backbone stock, transom material etc) and all fastenings for the boat (copper nails and silicon bronze wood screws).

Other items that can be included  in the packs are;

  • sails (white, classic cream or tanbark)
  • spar and oar materials including rowlocks and sockets in gunmetal or gal,
  • rudder gear and other traditional fittings
Plans can also be sourced as well.

With every dinghy pack sold, we include for free our great CD on clinker construction.

Freight anywhere in Australia is no problem so if you want to  have a dinghy pack put together, call Andrew on 0413765984.

Material sourcing

Looking for that special piece of timber or quality fitting?  Denman Marine can assist in sourcing most things for your project.  From timber to fastenings, paints and beautiful traditional yacht fittings, we can assist you in getting what you need for your project.

Timber Milling Service

re-sawing Huon Pine planking

At Denman Marine we realise that many smaller boatbuilders, including home builders don't have the equipment to process rough sawn timber to dimensioned size required for you project.  We offer a full timber milling service including a thin kerf re-saw ability that loses less than 3mm after cutting and thicknessing which is just the thing for planking stock.  No matter how small the job, Denman Marine can cut your timber to size so you can get on with your project.  For example, a recent job for a Sydney client was processing the backbone timber for a 14' traditional daysailer.  The timber was selected and milled including stem laminations and delivered right to his door.  Freight to Sydney was less than $150!

Training

Have you bought plans and are unsure where to go?  Like to learn a new boatbuilding technique?

Many people buy a set of plans but never make a start for many reasons.  For some it's time, others concern about lack of skill, or no workshop tools to cut up larger timbers.

At Denman Marine, we can provide training that enables you to learn new skills to help advance your project or just experience the joys of working with wooden boats.

We provide training in areas from costing your project to wooden boatbuilding techniques. We provide hands on, practical one on one or small class size tuition that will accelerate your project and leave you satisfied that you have learned a new and wonderful skill.

We are also able to provide support (email, telephone etc) for your project whether you are in Tasmania or interstate.

Denman Marine can accelerate your project by professionally building your hull and deck, spars, oars, centreboards and rudders or a structually complete boat that you can paint and finish at home.

Clinker Construction CD! - Revised Edition!!!

Ever wanted to look inside the builder's workshop for a look at construction methods?  Well here is the opportunity.  Whilst building the 2 Gartside 10 traditional clinker dinghies Whisper and Mischief, we kept a comprehensive photo record of everything from lofting to launching. We have compiled a CD in HTML format with over 700 photos and added plenty of text on the construction process to as well.

The revised edition contains additional photos and information from the building of Mischief, the second of these two lovely dinghies.

See methods such as stems being cut from grown crooks, planking, steaming and steam boxes, spiling plank shapes, roving and much more. Great to look at if you are interested in this type of construction.

The CD would also make an excellent christmas or birthday present for the nautically inclined.

Since the CD was originally published last year nearly 300 have been sold and some buyers have gone on to build their own boats using the CD as a guide.

Here's a few comments from buyers;

"Hi Andrew,
I CD recieved AOK and an absolutely excellent record - and a most traditional build." - Garry

"Recieved the CD, it is excellent...the info is already in use as I am making a new transom for a 16ft clinker I am also restoring so the section on the backbone was great"

"Hi Andrew,
I received the cd as promised and have read it through. It is a wonderful product that really clarifies the process of construction.  Thanks again for a great cd."

"Hi Andrew,
