International 8 Metre Spars

Another lovely project we are working are a set of spars for a new International 8 metre yacht Varg.

The original Varg was built by Anker and Jensen in 1924 in Norway before being purchased and shipped to Australia.  Like many older boats she succumbed to years of neglect and modifications away from original until she was spotted by a keen yachtsment and bought to Tasmania for a full restoration.  Unfortunately the hull was too far gone so a decison was made to have an entirely new boat built to the same design.

Denman Marine was approached to build the spars for Varg and it has been a real pleasure to be involved in a project like this.

 spar bench  mast glue up
inside the shed "extension"  Never enough clamps - the boatbuilders dilemma

To date the mast, spinnaker pole and boom have been glued up with the pole and boom shaped.  At approx 70' long, the shed had to take a small extension and it certainly called for every clamp inthe workshop and then some!

boom glue up sanding the boom
boom glue up - a good ad for Irwin clamps!  Sanding the boom

Beautiful timber, beautiful design and just lovely work.

boom end cap spruce dreadies
lovely cast bronze boom end cap  hamming it up - spruce dreadlocks anyone?
