Build Your Own Oars

CLC's build your own oars

Oarmaking is really something of a woodcarving exercise, and thus falls closer to the category of artwork rather than carpentry.  But we all need oars for our small boats, and CLC have resolved to make it possible for the average woodworker to turn out a beautiful pair of oars from scratch.

What is needed is a lot of detail, comprehensive step-by-step instructions, and full-sized patterns to make it easy to transfer the subtle shapes to the lumber.  John Harris and the CLC team spent six months designing, prototyping, and documenting the assembly and shaping of elegant traditional oars.  These oars are ideal for any fixed-seat hull from a 7-foot dinghy to a performance pulling boat, and everything in between.

For faster and more accurate construction---no matter what your skill level---we offer computer-cut patterns and templates in eight sizes from 6'0" to 9'6".  These pattern kits include full-sized templates for the elevation and plan view, and a completely unique jig to guide the subtle shaping of the blades.  The kits also include a special gauge for eight- and sixteen-siding the blanks as you plane the shafts round.

See here for further details regarding the CLC oars, otherwise please contact us.

Barton Marine Launches New Block Range

Barton Marine has launched a sleek new block range. Combining high performance engineering and contemporary design, the new range of blocks, available from Series 0 to Series 7 inclusive, have been designed for mariners who appreciate sleek styling and demand technical excellence.

Crafted by sailors for sailors, the new Barton Block Range is manufactured in the UK, and developed with the same design endurance and bullet-proof reliability that Barton has built its reputation on over the last 70 years.

Available with plain bearing or ball bearing sheaves, the new exterior styling displays dark slate side plates made of glass loaded nylon, which enclose a continuous stainless steel infrastructure for strength and durability across the line. Designed for low friction and longevity in harsh marine environments, the new Barton Block Range is smaller and lighter, but exhibits greater strength and performance for overall reliability.

Denman Marine can supply anything from Barton Marine's wide range of products including their new range of blocks. Please contact us to discuss your Barton Marine hardware requirements.

Swallow Boat's BayRaider

The BayRaider is truly an exciting development in the daysailer market and has many unique features that has made her such a popular choice for many owners.

Proudly built in our workshop in Tasmania, the BayRaider 17&20 have proved popular since their release.

Safety has been at the forefront of the design and she has been designed in accordance with the stringent European Recreational Craft Directive and carries CE certification for wind speeds up to force 6 and significant wave heights of 2m.

The Bayraider's key safety features include high form stability, water ballast, plenty of built in buoyancy, a unique asymmetric capsize buoyancy system (ACB) which allows a single person to right the boat (see video below) and a simple rig that allows a quick reduction of sail when needed.

Since the first BayRaider was launched, hundreds have been built around the world and she has gone on to win a number of awards including SAIL Magazine's boat of the year award in 2012. You can also read Practical Boat Owner magazines review of the BayRaider 20 here.

Please see the BayRaiders respective pages for further information, BayRaider 17 or BayRaider 20. Otherwise please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any other questions or are considering a Denman Marine built Swallow Boat.
