Wood Duck kayaks

Wood Duck

The Wood Duck kayak design is a beautiful, easy to use and build, recreational kayak. The range consists of kayaks designed for just about everyone to enjoy on the water. With big cockpits and ample stability, the emphasis is on comfort.  But these boats really paddle well!  Speed is excellent:  you can really cover the miles in a day, while tracking is solid in stiff crosswinds.

Compact and easy-to-launch boats seem to get used the most.  In a tenth of the time it takes to launch a heavy boat on a trailer or drag the big canoe down the lawn, you can slide one of these little kayaks into the water and be on your way.  Keep your Wood Duck on top of the car, ready to toss into all the interesting creeks in your local area.

The Wood Ducks are among our easiest-to-build kits.  Panels are precision-cut on our computerized equipment, with puzzle-joints and pre-drilled stitching holes for fast and accurate assembly.  Sheathed in fiberglass inside and out, the Wood Duck will withstand real-world abuse on gravel or shell beaches, and will bounce over submerged stumps without harm. An amateur builder with little to no experience should have the hull structurally complete within 30-35 hours. Therefor the bulk of the construction should be complete in only a couple of weekends, which is perfect if you want to get one in the water for summer.

The first five Wood Duck kits ordered during September will be eligible for free shipping (conditions apply, see September Special). You can find more information about our Wood Duck range here. Otherwise please contact us if you would like to place an order.

Waterlust Sailing Canoe

Waterlust Sailing Canoe

In the summer of 2016 Chesapeake Light Craft partnered with the film-making team Waterlust to design and build a pair of 17-foot sailing canoes. Waterlust - Patrick Rynne, Fiona Graham, Laura Graham, and Jennah Caster - then embarked on a 1,000-mile expedition down the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) in the finished canoes, from Norfolk to their home base in Miami, Florida.

The boats were drawn for Waterlust by CLC's own  Dillon Majoros. The design takes its cues from classic sailing canoes of the late 19th century. Dillon has added a higher volume hull with fuller ends for increased carrying capacity, stability, and performance under sail. The hull design includes watertight compartments fore and aft, watertight storage forward of cockpit, and stowage bins port and starboard in the cockpit that double as support rails for the seat. The cockpit extends under the aft deck, and may be used as a berth for the crew. The boat is powered by a yawl rig, which is traditional to the type and easy to manage, too.

Among the more unique features of the design is the option of an integrated Hobie Mirage Drive for auxiliary power.  This drops into a trunk in the cockpit.

We're recommending this design for folks who have built boats using the stitch-and-glue method. Dillon has created a comprehensive 28-page illustrated assembly guide, which you can download from this page to review. For experienced builders this will be an absolutely straightforward boatbuilding project. (First-timers will want to start with a kit that has one of our massively-detailed, 100+ page manuals.)

Denman Marine services - Restoration and Repair

Carvel sloop Teal arriving in the workshop for a complete restoration

One of the best things about wooden boats is that they are mostly long lived and are repairable. Many older boats have a wonderful history that is passed on between successive owners and some vessels remain in the same family, passed on to the next generation to enjoy.

At Denman Marine, our team of highly skilled boat builders can repair or restore your wooden boat to her former glory.

We provide repair and restoration services for traditional boats made from carvel or clinker construction and also vessels constructed using more modern methods such as strip planking or cold molding.

We can also provide interior re-fit services to give you old boat a facelift.

See here for further detail, otherwise contact us to discuss your restoration and repair requirements.

The Barton 'Wincher'

The Barton ‘Wincher’, a specially designed rubber moulding which fits over the top of standard winches, converting them to self-tailing. This simple operation works when the line is sheeted under load, which means the coils climb up the winch drum and then become gripped by the underside of the Winchers rubber body. Cleating is achieved by locking the sheet into the Winchers ribbed central groove. The Barton Winchers are easy to fit and available in four sizes to suit a wide range of popular winches. Full fitting instructions are included

We can supply anything from Barton Marine's wide range of products including the Wincher. See here to view their range of Winchers, otherwise contact us to discuss your requirements.
